With the League One table reaching the business end of the season, English football’s third tier remains incredibly tight at both ends of the table with just a single point seeing a team jump several places. On that note, promotion hopefuls Wigan will travel to Walsall on Wednesday night.

For the hosts, while Walsall may have all but booked their spot in League One next season, the Reds once again find themselves flirting with mid-table for a second consecutive table. After 37 games this season, Walsall have won 11, drawn 11 and lost the remaining 15, scoring 47 and conceding 54 in return. With 44 points in those 37 games, Walsall now find themselves sat 16th in the table and currently hold a six-point advantage over the drop zone. Despite a fine run of form at the turn of the year, Walsall have only won one in their last five, they have lost the remaining four, including their last two consecutive games.

As for the visitors, while Wigan’s brilliant FA Cup run may have come to an end last weekend, the Royals have enjoyed a successful season that could see them return to the Championship come next season. After 34 League One games, Wigan have won 21, drawn eight and lost their remaining five. Scoring 63 and conceding 23 in return, Wigan boasts the second best-attacking record in the league, and the best defensive record. While Wigan may currently be sat third in the table, the Latics hold a two games advantage over second place Shrewsbury and a win on Wednesday night will see them jump into the automatic positions.
