Two nations who are desperate to book a spot at this year’s World Cup finals, Iran will host Iraq on Thursday afternoon in what could be a low-scoring affair.

Starting with the hosts, last seen signing off 2021 with an eye-catching win on foreign soil, Iran should be confident of laying down another marker here. In their six Group A matchups over recent times, they have recorded five wins against a single draw, scoring 11 and conceding just two in return. In fact, along with holding a two-point buffer at the top of the table and also holding the best-defensive tally, it should also be noted that they’re the only Group A nation that are yet to pick up a single defeat. As for their recent run of results, last seen picking up a 3-0 win away at Syria, Iran are unbeaten in each of their last 12 outings, recording 11 wins. Likewise, it should also be highlighted, Thursday’s hosts have conceded just a pair of goals from their previous eight matchups on home soil.

As for the visitors, while Iraq might have signed off 2021 with their own friendly victory, they do find themselves in the midst of a real qualifying struggle. In their six Group A matchups, they have are yet to record a single win, with four draws against a pair of defeats, scoring just three and conceding nine in return. Managing to muster a points tally of four from a possible 18, they open Thursday’s meeting sat down in fifth and holding the worst-attacking tally in Group A. As for their recent run of results, last seen picking up a 1-0 win at home against Uganda, that was the only victory that Iraq have picked up from their last 12 matchups across all formats. Likewise, it should be noted, drawing a blank in four of their last five contests on foreign soil, we’re backing under 2.5 goals here.
