With the Championship table reaching the business end of the season, English football’s second division remains incredibly tight at both ends of the table with just a single point seeing a team jump several places. On that note, relegation candidates Sunderland will play host to Sheffield Wednesday on Monday afternoon.

For the hosts on Monday afternoon, former Wales boss Chris Coleman knows that the possibility of suffering back to back relegations is still looking ominously likely. After 39 Championship games, Sunderland have won just six, drawn 13 and lost 20, scoring 42 and conceding 69, Sunderland now boasts the worst defensive record in the division. With a points tally of 31, the North West side now sit in 23rd position and remain just a single point above Burton below them and are five-points adrift of Championship safety. As for their recent form, Sunderland are coming off the back of a shock 4-1 win away at promotion hopefuls Derby County that ended their 10 match winless run. However, losing seven of their last 11, Sunderland have failed to keep a clean sheet at the Stadium of Light in their last six.

As for the visitors, despite securing a top-six finish last season, Sheffield Wednesday have been unable to replicate last seasons form this time around. After 39 Championship games, Wednesday have won just 10, drawing 14 and lost 15, scoring 45 and conceding 53. With a points tally of 44, despite finishing fifth last season, Sheffield Wednesday now find themselves 17th and while they hold a 10 points advantage over the drop zone, they now remain nine points from breaking into the top half of the table. As for their recent form, like their hosts, Wednesday are coming off the back of a 4-1 win over Preston and are now unbeaten in their last three. However, while Wednesday have scored in their eight of their last nine Championship matches, they have not kept a clean sheet in their last seven.
