In a battle between two sides who find the mood in their camp at polar opposites, Sunderland will host Hull City from behind closed doors on Saturday afternoon.

Starting with the hosts, while Sunderland might have shown some issues before last year’s League One campaign was brought to an early halt, they have enjoyed an eye-catching summer run. Getting in the perfect preparation before they make a return to action this weekend, the former Premier League outfit landed three pre-season wins on the bounce and have also continued to shine with their performances on home soil. Despite their issues outside of the North East, Sunderland are unbeaten in each of their last 10 competitive matchups on home soil and have scored at least a pair of goals in four of their last five home fixtures. It should also be noted that Saturday’s hosts are unbeaten in each of their last five meetings against the Tigers.

As for the visitors, dropping back down to League One after a woeful end to last year’s extended Championship campaign, Hull City find themselves in the midst of a crisis. Eventually finishing bottom of the standings in England’s second-tier, they signed off their campaign by enduring a six-match losing run, conceding a staggering 19 goals on that dreadful patch. Even more concerning for Hull, along with managing to win just one of their last 24 contests across all formats, it should also be noted that they conceded 87 Championship strikes last season, the worst defensive tally in the division. Given their continued issues at the back, we’re backing a fruitful afternoon for Sunderland this weekend.
