As the domestic leagues come to another abrupt end, players and managers will now be turning their attention to this summers World Cup finals in Russia. While Portugal led by Cristiano Ronaldo will be hoping for a similar run that saw them crowned Euro 2016 champions, Holland are a side in transition who will be watching the World Cup from their sofas this year.
For the hosts on Friday, Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal will be filled with confidence ahead of this summers World Cup finals. Entering the tournaments as the European champions in 2016, Portugal enjoyed another successful run in Group B. After 10 games in qualifying, Portugal won nine and lost only one, scoring 32 and conceding just four in those 10 games, Portugal finished with both the best attacking and defensive record in Group B. As for their recent form, after finishing third in the Confederations Cup Portugal are coming off the back of a 2-1 victory over Egypt on Friday night. Portugal are now unbeaten in their last eight matches, winning seven and drawing the remaining one.
As for the visitors, after now failing to make the last two major tournaments, the former European giants are now a side in transition and have turned to former Everton boss Ronald Koeman to help lead the next generation of Dutch talent. In their 10 qualifying matches in Group A, Holland won six, drew one and lost three, scoring 21 and conceding 12. Finishing third in Group A, Holland’s goal difference saw them fail to reach the finals in Russia this summer. Holland are most recently coming off the back of a 1-0 home defeat to England on Friday night and have now failed to beat Portugal in their last 10 matches, a run stemming back to 1992.
