With the MLS season just getting back underway, every team remains determined to get off to a good start in both the Eastern and Western Conferences. On Thursday night, early league leaders New York City will welcome Real Salt Lake to the Yankee Stadium.
After finishing second in the Eastern Conference last season before crashing out in the playoffs against Columbus Crew, New York City are early favorites to go one step further and lift a piece of silverware this season. The Blues have enjoyed a brilliant start to the new year and already sit in top spot. After just five games this season, the Blues are still unbeaten, winning four and drawing one, New York have scored 10 and conceded just four, they also now hold the best defensive record in the Eastern Conference. Summer signing Ismael Tajouri already has three goals in his opening five games and NYC have scored two goals in each of their MLS outings this season.
As for the visitors on Thursday night, after missing out on the playoffs by a single point last season, Real Salt Lake are hoping that they can turn their fortunes around this year. After five games in the MLS Western Conference so far, Real Salt Lake have recorded two wins, one draw and two defeats, scoring six and conceding 10, Salt Lake now boast the worst defensive record in the Western Conference. With seven points, Real Salt Lake now sit fourth in the table and are five points adrift of Sporting Kansas City at the top of the table.
