With Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric recently admitting the side’s focus has shifted from the league with a Champions League final against rivals Atletico Mardrid to come this month, Espanyol will be hoping they can get a surprise victory at the Santiago Bernabeu this weekend.

It’s unlikely Real Madrid players are going to risk injury with the Champions League final so close, and as their title hopes are over for the season it’s very likely they could take their foot off the gas in their final league game, despite it being at home.

Madrid’s recent form has been woeful too. Los Blancos have lost three and drawn two of their previous nine games in the league.

Espanyol haven’t fared any better, however. They are in mid-table obscurity and haven’t won in the league since March. But they had a close encounter with Madrid when the two sides met in January – losing just 1-0.

They’ll be hoping Madrid still have on eye on the Champions League final to come.
