Chelsea’s Fernando Torres 5/4 to join former side Atletico Madrid this summer
Competition: Premier League
Market: Torres to join Atletico Madrid
Odds: 5/4 @ Ladbrokes
Following a miserable campaign for Chelsea striker Fernando Torres, rumours are surfacing about his future this summer. His former side Atletico Madrid, who won the La Liga title last season, have lost two strikers already for this season (David Villa to New York City, and Diego Costa to Chelsea) and have been considering a move for the Spanish international.
Torres was with Atletico from 1995 until 2007, scoring 59 goals in 140 games. He left to join Liverpool, before moving on to Chelsea in 2011. Fans in Spain still love him as he was a hero during his Atletico days, while playing a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2008 triumph.
There’s been no official approach made from the Champions League runners-up just yet, however, and the new campaign starts in less than a month. Torres hasn’t exactly put himself in the shop window either, with the 30-year-old scoring just five goals in 28 Premier League games. His form has been better in Europe (9 games, 4 goals ), but Chelsea would be happy to cash in on him as he still has two years to run on his deal.
Atletico signed Mario Mandzukic from Bayern Munich this summer, and they’re likely to consider bringing in another experienced European attacker to boost their chances of remaining a force in the league and Champions League.
