Can Arsenal end five-year wait for an FA Cup semi-final?

Posted March 5th, 2014 | By: Crippy Cooke

Competition: FA Cup
Market: Arsenal to beat Everton
Odds: 4/5 @ Coral

The last time Arsenal made an FA Cup semi-final was in 2009 where they lost 2-1 against London rivals Chelsea. Since then, they have continued to falter at the quarters or even earlier in the competition. But this weekend Arsene Wenger’s men have a home tie against Everton to book their place at Wembley and give themselves every chance of ending the nine-year trophy drought.

Coral are giving odds of 4/5 for the Gunners to beat the Toffees and end the barren spell in the FA Cup, but they will certainly face stiff competition in Everton this season. Roberto Martinez’s men held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw on the Gunner’s home patch earlier this campaign, and now the two sides meet with Everton welcoming the return of striker & top scorer Romelu Lukaku – who recently scored after coming off the bench against West Ham.

Everton haven’t beaten the Gunners in any competition since 2007, but their recent matches against Arsenal have been on a knife-edge – with both clubs playing out stalemates in their last three league meetings.

The Merseyside outfit have a good recent FA Cup record too. They made the quarters last season, but lost out to eventual cup-winners Wigan Athletic. And the season before, they made the semis but were beaten by fierce rivals Liverpool 2-1. They’ll certainly want redemption this season, but can Arsenal emerge victorious?
