Two teams that will be looking to make a statement in the opening fixture in Group A, hosts Russia will face off against Saudi Arabia at Stadion Luzhniki in Moscow on Thursday afternoon for the first matchup of this summers World Cup finals.
For Russia, with their spot in the finals automatically confirmed as the host nation, the Russians have been drawn in Group A, alongside Suadi Arabia, Uraguay and Egypyt. However, while all the other finalists had to go through qualifying, Russia have spent the past 12 months competing in friendlies trying to gain some much-needed momentum, sadly for Russia’s home support, their side has been drastically short of form. In their seven international friendlies, the hosts have failed to pick up a single win and have drawn three and lost four. This will be the first time the two sides have met since 1993, where Saudi Arabia came away 4-2 victors.
As for Saudi Arabia, although they may have left it to the final match in qualifying, the visitors booked their spot in Russia courtesy of their goal difference. Finishing in second spot and scoring 17 goals in the group stages, Saudi Arabia finished qualifying with the joint best-attacking stats in the Group B. As for their form entering the finals, The Greens may have lost their last three in a row but have put up a valiant effort and have also managed to find the net against defending Champions Germany and also former European powerhouses Italy.
