As the domestic leagues come to another abrupt end, players and managers will now be turning their attention to this summers World Cup finals in Russia. While Gareth Southgate’s England side face a tough test against Holland and Argentina in their international friendlies, the Dutch once again have another summer of watching a major tournament from their sofas.

For the hosts on Friday, after appointing former Crystal Palace manager Frank De Bour is their new full-time manager, the former European giants now have a long way to go if they want to reach those heights once again. Missing out on this summers World Cup finals, this is now the second consecutive major tournament the Dutch have missed out on. Finishing third in Group A behind Sweden and France, Holland won six, drew one and lost three. However, while they will have a summer free, Holland have shown some signs of improvement of late, while this will be De Bour’s first match in charge, Holland have now won their last five matches in a row and have not conceded a single goal in their last three outings, this includes victories over Scotland and Sweden.

As for England, all eyes once again turn on Gareth Southgate as the three lions boss starts to put together the final preparations for this summers tournament. Finishing top of Group F with 26 points, England did not lose a single matchup during their qualifying campaign. In their 10 Group F games, Southgate’s side won eight and drew two, scoring 18 and conceding just three in those 10 outings, England boasted both the best defensive and attacking record in Group F. Selecting to play Holland and Argentina in their international break, England have also put on disciplined displays against Brazil and Germany. drawing both 0-0, England are now unbeaten in their last seven appearances and have kept clean sheets in their last four matches in a row.
