Chelsea are reportedly stepping up their pursuit to have a new manager installed for the 2016/17 season, and Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone is said to be their number one target. The South American allegedly told friends of the impending switch, and he could well be confirmed in the coming months.

Despite a decent league and European campaign with Atleti, the Spanish outfit are someway short in the La Liga title race, and could well endure a trophyless term as a result. Simeone could well leave the Vicente Calderon Stadium, and Chelsea are lining him up to replace interim boss Guus Hiddink.

The Dutch coach has announced plans to retire from the game in the summer, and the likes of Antonio Conte (Italy manager), Jorge Sampaoli (former Chile manager) and Massimiliano Allegri (Juventus manager) are on Chelsea’s shortlist of potential replacements.

Simeone has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for some time, however, and would be the club’s top pick given his impressive rise to prominence with Atleti despite being outspent by rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.
