La Liga holders Atletico Madrid begin their defence against Rayo Vallecano tonight. Diego Simeone’s side have had a difficult summer, losing a selection of their most influential players, with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois leaving for parent club Chelsea, left-back Filipe Luis joining the Londoners, and striker Diego Costa following him through the door.

But Madrid have spent money on decent replacements this summer, with the likes of former Real Sociedad winger Antoine Griezmann and ex-Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic brought in. They are coming off the back of having beaten Real Madrid in the Super Cup too, which has led William Hill to back the Red and Whites with odds of 11/20 to win away to Rayo this evening.

Last season, Rayo finished 11 places and 47 points behind Atletico, and conceded more goals than any other La Liga side. In three of the last seasons, Atletico’s opponents have finished in the bottom-half of the table.
