Aston Villa host Sunderland in the Premier League this afternoon, with the Midlands outfit looking to get back to winning ways after consecutive defeats. They recently earned a high-scoring Capital One Cup victory, so they have some momentum ahead of the visit of the Black Cats today.

As for the away side, Sunderland are still waiting for their first league win of the new season, and will fancy their chances of getting a result against the Villans given their recent dip in form in the division. Aston Villa boast a good record in past meetings against Sunderland, but this season the two sides are only two points apart in the table.

The hosts won their opening league outings, but have since suffered defeats against Manchester United and Crystal Palace to slide down the table. They are currently 14th after three games, but could move back into the top-half with a win over their North-East counterparts.

Defeat, however, could see the Villans in the relegation zone depending on other results, so Tim Sherwood’s side are desperate to get back to winning ways. As for Sunderland, the Black Cats are 19th in the table, and already their situation looks precarious.

The visitors have dropped points to the likes of Leicester City, Norwich City an Swansea City in the Premier League, and could find the gap to safety opening up if they don’t earn their first league win soon. Recent form suggests this could be Villa’s day, however.
