With the Europa League still housing some of the biggest names in European football this season, AC Milan will travel to the Emirates on Thursday night looking to overcome a two-goal deficit if they intend to book their spot in the quarterfinals.
For the hosts on Thursday night, while Arsenal may have briefly bounced back from their domestic misery, Arsene Wenger’s position at Arsenal still appears to be untenable. In the Premier League this season, after 30 matches, the Gunners have won 14, drawn six and lost 10, scoring 55 and conceding 41 in return, Arsenal’s point tally of 48 is their lowest in their French bosses’ two-decade reign in North London. Currently sat sixth in the Premier League, Arsenal are chasing a 12 point deficit to the top-four and Arsenal will know that their only chance of securing Champions League football next season lies with capturing the Europa League this year. After losing four games on the bounce prior to their trip to the San Siro, Arsenal have now won their last two outings.
As for the visitors, former Milan midfielder Gennaro Gattuso will be demanding his AC side put on an improved performance to their lackluster showing at the San Siro last week. Aside from their blip against Arsenal, Gattuso has done a remarkable job in turning AC Milan’s fortunes around. After 27 Serie A matches this season, Milan have won 14, drawn five and lost eight times, scoring 38 and conceding 30, Milan’s form since the beginning of 2018 has seen them climb into the top six of the table. As for their recent form, AC bounced immediately back from their first defeat of the New Year when they picked up a 1-0 win away at Genoa. Gattuso’s side have now lost just one of their last 15 outings in all competitions.
