Two sides who are looking to gain some much-needed minutes before their representative campaigns get underway next month, Ajax will host Watford on Thursday evening.

Starting with the hosts, enjoying a stellar season both domestically and in Europe last season, Ajax have their sights firmly set on reclaiming their Dutch crown in the next campaign. Along with reaching the semi-final of last year’s Champions League, they also won the Eredivisie title with a three-point buffer and only lost just two of their 34 domestic matchups, winning 28 of those appearances. Also losing just one of their last 11 matches on home soil, Ajax have continued to shine in pre-season. The Dutch outfit are unbeaten in their three pre-season matches heading into Wednesday’s contest.

As for the visitors, while Watford may have started the previous Premier League campaign in high spirits, they did show real signs of a struggle at the back end of the season. Finishing with a points tally of 50 and winning 14 of their 38 domestic matchups, the Hornets also ended the campaign two points adrift of securing a top-half finish in England’s top-tier. Despite briefly dreaming of securing a European spot, the Yellows lost each of their last four matches at the end of the season and conceded a very worrying 15 goals on that losing run. It is also worth noting that Watford lost five of their last six matches on the road.
